What are the most common infections I should test for?
Chlamydia
Caused by a build-up of bacteria in the uterus, cervix, urethra or rectum, Chlamydia can lead to serious health issues such as infertility if left untreated. There are an estimated 210,000 infections of Chlamydia in the UK alone. Treatment is typically antibiotics with early diagnosis being crucial for a successful recovery.
Gonorrhoea
Gonorrhoea is an infectious disease caused by bacteria known as Neisseria gonorrhoea. This infection grows easily in warm environments such as in the female reproductive system including the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes. However, around half of women and one in ten men do not develop any symptoms due to symptoms occurring as delayed as 14 days to months after being exposed to the infection.
Syphilis
Syphilis is caused by bacteria known as Treponema pallidum. This infection can lead to painful symptoms in the primary stage such as infected sores, blisters or ulcers on your genitals, anus, or mouth. At Randox Health we only screen for Primary Syphilis.
Genital Herpes
Genital Herpes is caused by one of the two herpes complex viruses. Genital herpes is very common with those infected having few symptoms not knowing they are infected.
