At Randox Health, we’re committed to staying at the forefront of medical innovation, especially when it comes to early detection and prevention. That’s why we’re excited to announce the addition of two advanced prostate health biomarkers, Nicked PSA and ProPSA, to our Signature Health Test Packages.
But what do these new tests mean for you? Let’s find out.
The Limitations of Traditional PSA Testing
Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) testing has long been a key tool in screening for prostate cancer. However, it’s not without its challenges. While PSA can indicate a problem with the prostate, it isn’t cancer-specific, it can also be elevated in non-cancerous conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or infections.
This lack of specificity means that traditional PSA tests can lead to unnecessary biopsies and overdiagnosis, sometimes causing more stress than clarity. That’s where our new markers come in.
Introducing Nicked PSA (Benign PSA)
Nicked PSA, also known as benign PSA, is an inactive form of the PSA protein. Research shows that nicked PSA is more commonly elevated in men with benign prostate enlargement rather than cancer. Measuring this specific form can help distinguish between a harmless enlargement and cancer, providing much-needed context to traditional PSA test results.
Key Point: Elevated Nicked PSA – More likely to be benign.
ProPSA and 2proPSA
ProPSA is an inactive precursor to the PSA protein. Higher levels of proPSA may indicate a higher likelihood of prostate cancer. Partial processing of proPSA can result in various forms. One particular form, called 2proPSA, is unable to go further processing and may accumulate in men with prostate cancer. Studies have detected 2proPSA in areas of the prostate gland where cancer develops, in addition higher levels have been observed in tissue samples and the blood of men with prostate cancer.
Key Point: Elevated 2proPSA – Higher likelihood of prostate cancer.
Why These Markers Matter for You
Adding Nicked PSA and ProPSA to your prostate health check can:
- Reduce false alarms by helping differentiate between benign conditions and cancer
- Provide earlier warning signs of aggressive cancer
- Help make informed decisions, especially if you have risk factors like age or a family history of prostate cancer
Results are presented for information purposes. Results should be considered alongside Total PSA levels and in conjunction with symptoms & risk factors.
